Betrayal of the Promise: How South Africa is Being Stolen – my talk delivered last week on 27 July at University of Cape Town based on the report by the same name compiled by the State Capacity Research Group – a team of academics from different Universities that I convened to compile this report and conduct more detailed case studies. An eminent group were the panelists who responded to the talk, and the event was hosted by a co-author, Prof Haroon Bhorat.

The papers are (a) Learning from energy transitions in the global South: linking energy transitions and economic development – product of the TENTRANS project, with Danish partners; and (b) Long waves and sustainability transitions.

Panel on Sustainable Transition Pathways in African Economies
Participated in a Panel on Sustainable Transition Pathways in African Economies at the SDG Summit hosted by UCT on 14 September. The SDG Summit was an international conference hosted by UCT that included many international speakers from across Africa. My inputs at the UCT SDG Summit drew on the work I’m doing at the moment for the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa Central Africa Office – a concept note on ‘transformational leadership’ for a summit of the 11 countries in November. Drawing on political settlements theory, the focus is the leadership and institutional conditions for economic transformation and effective industrial policy within a carbon- and resource-constrained world.
